How to dress according to your body type (Body Shape series)

You generally know what looks best on you—perhaps there’s a wrap dress that consistently makes you feel confident or you always gravitate toward wide-leg pants—but we figured a more in-depth look at dressing for your body type is never a bad idea. Since there are so many shapes and silhouettes in the market, and trends are ever-changing, how is one supposed to successfully navigate through shopping for your specific body type only?

The first step to finding the right clothes to bring out your inner goddess, or rock star or CEO is to figure out your specific body type so that you can play up your best features:


Body shape is all about proportions and fashion is all about dressing those proportions to look their best. When you think about body types don’t focus on height or weight, rather focus on shape. A slender gal can have the same body shape as a curvy gal, just as a short woman can have the same body shape as her taller friend. Once you’ve determined your body shape, then put these fashion tips to work –

1) Pear body shape

The best assets for this body type are shoulder and torso. Emphasize on your waist and arms, add volume to your shoulders and upper body. Try A-line skirts. Keep hems of pants, skirts, and dresses wide to balance the hips. You should experiment with light-colored tops and dark-colored bottoms contrast. Whenever you go shopping look for boat neck tops, square and cowl necklines. Wear strapless dresses to show off arms and even out proportions. Try styles with ruffles on top. Wear jackets that hit right above the waist. Opt for pointy-toed shoes to elongate your legs.

2) Wedge body shape

The best assets for this body type are legs. Accentuate your lower body while softening your shoulders and upper body. If you’ve got great legs, opt for something shorter but that has sleeves to give you some balance — so you’re not showing too much at any one time. Also, shape-wear is a must regardless of your size. It smooths you out and gives you a great silhouette. DO wear bright colors on bottom, wear wide-leg pants, wear full skirts. DON’T wear spaghetti-strap tops, boat neckline tops, experiment with high-waisted styles. Look for clothes that create the illusion of a waist.

3) Rectangle body shape

The best assets for this body type are arms and legs. You should create curves and show off slender legs and arms. A great alternative to a dress for a rectangle-shaped body would be the crop top and skirt sets that are currently on trend. DO wear scoop neck and sweetheart tops to create curves, wear long jackets to create a lean look, wear tops with collars, ruffles and details to flatter your chest. DON’T wear overwhelming styles. Layer up to add more dimensions. Wear dresses with ruching. Cinches on sides are ideal. Have fun with colorful bottoms… feel free to experiment.

4) Apple body shape

As apple-shaped bodies have a fuller, rounder torso with a minimal waistline, it’s important to lengthen your body. Select dresses that have necklines that elongate your figure, like V-necks. Dresses with an A-line or empire hem should be staples for an apple-shaped body. A way to create a waistline and draw attention away from the mid-section is to wear a structured jacket with a dress. Especially during the spring time where it can still get chilly from time to time, jackets and cover-ups are still needed! Selecting structured pieces can create a curve in your chest and hips. You should go for monochromatic looks, go for v-neck tops to create the illusion of a longer torso. Wear shorter skirts to show off your legs and draw attention away from your midsection.

5) Hourglass body shape

Best assets are the curves. As with those who have apple-shaped bodies, hourglass bodies should wear dresses with V-necks or sweetheart necklines to slim down the bust. Accessorize with belts so that the naturally smaller waist is showcased. A-line cut or wrap dresses are a perfect match for the hourglass-shaped body. DON’T hide your curves with baggy clothing. DO wear fitted dresses, wear a belt at the waist to enhance your hourglass shape. Go for wrap dresses, high-waisted skirts. Pick thin, lightweight styles and fabrics. Wear skinny or straight leg jeans.
