Uttar Pradesh was initially named the United Province. Sounds English, right? India was under the British Raj when the state got its English name but it was changed to Uttar Pradesh after independence.

The most commonly worn clothes in UP are Salwar Kurta, also known as suits. The Salwar and Kurta is worn with the iconic dupatta, in some cultures dupatta worn over their head as a sign of respect. The trend of wearing sarees is not that prevalent in Uttar Pradesh.

Uttar Pradesh is quite a large state and has quite a distinguished fashion market, be it the “chikan” embroidery from Lucknow or the “Zari” work of Aligarh,  Ferozabad for its glass bangles, or Varanasi for the famous and evergreen “Banaresi” Saree. The list is endless.

The people of this state have an edge over everyone and like dressing up. They love dressing like royalty and don’t prefer being seen in a mundane attire. They opt for loud, dark or vibrant colours. They accessorise to the fullest.

Even though a suit is generally worn by everyone in the country, the “chikan” embroidery suit is a must-have. Purchase a long Shirt with the Chikan work on the sleeves and the collar to get a sheer elegant style which is going to be perfect for your office and a day outing. Banaresi Saree is evergreen and the delicate work never goes out of fashion. So, that’s a definite buy for every desi girl out there.

When it comes to men, they usually prefer wearing Kurta pyjama.Men also often sport a head-gear like a topi or a pagri. Sherwani is a more formal male dress and is frequently worn along with chooridar on festive occasions. European-style trousers and shirts are also common among the men.

One of the most important things to remember while dressing up with Uttar Pradesh inspiration is that cosmetics and jewelry are extremely essential. Because it’s also the land of Surma that is kohl and UPites swear by it. From a girl of 12 to a woman of 80 they all wear their Kohl with pride. You would never catch a female in this region without glass bangles.

Which you should wear more too. Just a set of color-coordinated bangles works great as a bracelet or steel bangles are always a safe bet if one doesn’t feel like getting experimental. All in all, U.P makes all Fashion diva’s extremely happy with all that they have to offer.
