The fashion industry has seen many changes in past years, but the major change which the industry has seen is in the past decade or we say in past 10 years, be it Bollywood or Hollywood. The industry has seen major changes with tons of creative director changes, fashion bloggers dominating the fashion scene and social media revolutionizing the way that design houses and their consumers interact. The Olsen twins became fashion icons, celebrity stylists came out from behind-the-scenes and the popularity of skinny jeans is coming to an end.
We are so connected to everyone about everything all the time that it seems impossible to remember a time when this wasn’t the case. However, 10 years ago sites like Facebook and Twitter were just starting to gain steam as popular destinations. It wasn’t until several years ago that businesses, including famous fashion houses like Chanel, truly embraced social media as a way to reach more people. Brands now have a presence on nearly every social media platform possible from Tumblr to Instagram to SnapChat. Being able to interact directly with customers has been a way to make fashion more accessible to a larger range of people.
There are so many fashion bloggers covering every single aspect of fashion that it seems insane that 10 years ago, the fashion blogging concept was just being born. When fashion bloggers first started, they blogged about…fashion. The big change that has taken place, besides the visibility and the number of bloggers, is that fashion bloggers are now lifestyle bloggers. Fashion bloggers no longer focus solely on fashion trends and the current season’s must-haves. In the past 10 years, fashion bloggers have become the chic experts in every aspect of a stylish life including food, beauty, and even interior design.
Athleisure has been around for a long time – Gwen Stefani is a fashion icon who has always been known to combine sporty elements with high fashion, but this trend is just now starting to be seen everywhere. Seriously, everywhere. Supermodels Gigi Hadid and Kendall Jenner have a huge following of young fans and you might be surprised to learn that the number one brand among teenagers since 2011 has been an athletic house, Nike. Asked 10 years ago, teens listed stores like Abercrombie & Fitch and Hollister as the most popular places to shop.
A little over 10 years ago, clothing and big-box retailers began collaborations with some of the fashion industry’s most sought-after designers. For instance, in 2004 H&M launched their very first designer collab with fashion icon Karl Lagerfeld himself. The following two years, H&M partnered with Stella McCartney and Viktor & Rolf. Since these early collaborations, many more designers and chains have gotten in on the action. Target has seen collaborations with Missoni, Prabal Gurung, and Lilly Pulitzer. Design collaborations make high fashion accessible to many and show no sign of slowing down.
While the fashion industry is constantly evolving and bringing innovative designs to consumers, for the last five years the fashion industry has been moving forward by looking to fashion’s past. More so than any other period in history, this decade will be heavily influenced by the popular fashions of other decades including the ‘70s, ‘80s, and ‘90s. The future of fashion is unknown, you can be sure that it includes providing the world with new ways to present their personalities through clothing.
