HUMA QURESHI- BODY SHAMING
Every once in a while, instead of defining ourselves, we let others define us. We accept their harsh criticism of ourselves when they tell us that we’re too thin or too fat; that we’re not good enough. Body shaming is not something new. We face this problem every day in our lives or see other people facing it too. According to studies, body shaming leads to eating disorders, depression, and many other health issues. It tampers with one’s sense of self and can do major damage in one’s self-esteem. The key to dealing with this criticism of ‘not being perfect’ is by not letting the pessimism get of it to you. And Huma Qureshi has shown us how to shut these judgemental haters up like a total boss.
Huma Qureshi does not have the ‘perfect-stereotype-body’ and was critiqued by many for it. In a video by Levis, she revealed that she was once called ‘5 kilos too overweight to be a mainstream actress’. Her mantra to dealing with these situations is to not let the ‘bullies’ and their views get to her in any way. She loves her body the way it is and does not apologize for it. Huma was on the cover of Femina in 2015 that said ‘I don’t owe you perfection. My body, my rules’ which sent out a clear message to all the critics out there is nothing that they can say to make her feel ashamed of her body. Her confidence and fierceness of not giving a damn continues to inspire many and shows us how we can too love ourselves the way we are. Because at the end of the day, your opinion about yourself is the only one that truly matters. Beauty is subjective and comes in all shapes and sizes. So next time, if someone tries to body shame you, do what Huma Qureshi did. Let them know that their opinion of your body doesn’t make the slightest of difference and that you do not owe them perfection. Your body, your rules. Be bold, be fierce. And do not forget to love yourself!
We need to stop this at this very moment, and we can do that by making people who shame others realise how this affects life of those who go through this and how dangerous it is for their minds and bodies both to be body shamed just because they don’t land into the definition of beauty and perfection set by the society.
For this, we ask people to be brave enough to accept their mistake by taking up a challenge and accepting their mistake in front of the world. Take up this #Mirchichallenge and accept that you have body shamed someone in your life and become get rid of the guilt and live freely.
