Body Shaming, This just doesn’t end, despite constant efforts

We criticize the way that others look but then shame them when they do the same to us. We have separated ourselves into categories based on the way we look. It’s fat against a fit and it is wrong.

Jennifer Lopez is one of the most successful and influential women in the world with a thriving singing career, a position as an American Idol judge and her film career. Her words and actions impact her millions of fans worldwide. While she may have amazing offers and opportunities now, that wasn’t always the case. Just like everyone, there was a phase where she had to struggle to showcase her talent, where she was just beginning to pursue her dream, her struggle was made much harder with the fat shaming that she was subjected to. She has shared her story and experience about just how humiliating Body Shaming can be and how she has dealt with and overcame it.

Jennifer Lopez opened up about the unrealistic beauty standards and the Body Shaming that she had to face, to E! and stated “They kept telling me to lose weight and I was a dancer and athletic and even my manager at the time, who I no longer work with,  was telling me ‘You need to lose weight. You need to be thinner’ and I was like, ‘No I don’t. If I lose any more weight it won’t be me.’ You know what I mean?”. Jennifer Lopez was inspired to share her story because a fan told her that she inspired her to stop wearing sweatshirts around her waist. Lopez stated “It was a fight. It was definitely a fight, and so its good to hear that it helped anybody in some way because at the end of the day I was just trying to be myself without trying to fit into a mold of what everybody else should be.”

Later on, Jennifer Lopez said that she believes the entertainment industry is moving towards progress in reducing Body Shaming and also that the industry is accepting more diversity whether its a body type, race or gender. However, she still feels the pressure and told that it’s not really easy to keep her body in shape. Jennifer is such an optimistic soul and inspiration to all of us. when asked what advice she would give her self as a teenager, she replied “Love yourself! stop spending so much time worrying about what others think about you because when you love yourself and you’re happy, that’s reflected in your whole body and that’s what makes you truly Beautiful”. She stands behind the evolution of Body Confidence and we should too.

We need to stop this at this very moment, and we can do that by making people who shame others realise how this affects life of those who go through this and how dangerous it is for their minds and bodies both to be body shamed just because they don’t land into the definition of beauty and perfection set by the society.

For this, we ask people to be brave enough to accept their mistake by taking up a challenge and accepting their mistake in front of the world. Take up this #Mirchichallenge and accept that you have body shamed someone in your life and become get rid of the guilt and live freely.
