#STOPIT, All About Kakcho, Stop It!

14 Nov , 2017

Let’s be honest here. At some point in time in our lives, almost all of us or at least somebody that we know has been a victim of body shaming.  And it wasn’t any different for 24-year old American singer and songwriter Meghan Trainor. She’s one of the many celebrities who has fallen prey to body shaming. Being chubby as a kid and as a teen, Meghan has been bullied for the same.

‘She looks so fat wearing that dress’, ‘Had you been thinner, that dress would be perfect for you’, ‘Aren’t you planning on losing some weight for the wedding?’, ‘Trust me. Shed a few kilos and you would look like a million bucks’. And the list goes on and on. And let’s face it- hearing any of this isn’t any fun.

It’s not always random people that say things that can make us feel bad about ourselves, sometimes it is also our friends or people that we are close with. And such things can stick with us for a long, long time. Meghan Trainor experienced this when she was a middle school student. Her best friend told her that she would look a lot prettier if she were 10 pounds lighter.

“I felt horrible and cried all day”, she said. “That memory is still in my brain. It affected me so much”, she added. She says that even though she has moved on from it that memory still haunts her sometimes. She was always insecure only because of the fact that she wasn’t skinny. We can’t even begin to imagine the hard and challenging times that Meghan must have gone through. Such incidences have led many people into believing that their bodies aren’t perfect and have made them feel self-doubting.

Meghan Trainor believes that her message is important now more than ever. In today’s world bullying someone on their body image is only a comment or a social media post away. And hence, before making such remarks one’s sentiments should be thought of. Such things leave a scar that may even last a lifetime.

We need to stop this at this very moment, and we can do that by making people who shame others realise how this affects life of those who go through this and how dangerous it is for their minds and bodies both to be body shamed just because they don’t land into the definition of beauty and perfection set by the society.

For this, we ask people to be brave enough to accept their mistake by taking up a challenge and accepting their mistake in front of the world. Take up this #Mirchichallenge and accept that you have body shamed someone in your life and become get rid of the guilt and live freely.
